A critical enabler protein that that allows phagocytic cells to clean out dead cells from the body has been discovered by researchers. The results about the protein were published in the journal Nature, by the UVA Health System study. In simpler words, the new enabler protein allows the cells which clean the body's dead cells, to do so in a more efficient and vigorous manner, which could prove useful for scientists in understanding atherosclerosis better. The discovery of the new protein could also be critical in the cure of various metabolic diseases like diabetes and obesity.
The researchers discovered that the particular phagocyte Uncoupling Protein 2 (Ucp2), is the important factor in deciding the rate of cleaning up of dead cells, and does so more efficiently and rapidly, enabling the body to regenerate new cells better.
